Global food chains are buckling under new medical nutrition demands for protein. The US patient is being prescribed protein heavy diets to accompany the GLP-1 meds cycle and beyond. This consumer behaviour is now expanding globally and SE Asia demand is next.
What Are GLP-1 Medications?
GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) receptor agonists are medications that replicate the effects of the naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone produced in the gut. They help regulate blood sugar by stimulating insulin release, suppressing glucagon secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and increasing feelings of fullness, which can lead to weight loss. Originally developed for type 2 diabetes, these drugs are now widely used for obesity management and are being studied for other conditions like heart disease, chronic kidney disease, and even substance use disorders.
